The Long Pursuit

A Love Kept as an Image
Waiting for Her Return
Pedro spends years accumulating land and influence while hoping to see Susana again. The pursuit gives his ambition a private motive, but his imagined beloved increasingly matters more than the actual person.
A Father’s Refusal
When Bartolomé San Juan returns with Susana, Pedro sees an opportunity to claim the woman he has idealized since childhood. His affection is already entangled with possession and control.
Bartolomé’s Removal

A Return Made Coercive
Pedro’s Demand
Pedro tells Bartolomé that he wants Susana, not the mining claims Bartolomé might offer. Susana herself indicates that she is willing to sleep with Pedro, while her father rejects the arrangement and insists on his authority as her parent.
A Disappearance Arranged
Pedro sends Bartolomé back to the mines and orders Fulgor to ensure that he does not return with Susana. Bartolomé is killed away from the estate, leaving Susana isolated in the household Pedro controls.
A Mind Turned Elsewhere

Susana’s Inward World
Hallucinated Visitors
Susana speaks to her dead father and revisits memories that other people cannot share. Her visions make her seem inaccessible to the household, but they also protect an inner world from the authority surrounding her.
The Absent Florencio
Her strongest longing is for Florencio, whose body and love she remembers as real. Pedro watches her without understanding that the woman he has brought home is emotionally devoted to someone beyond his reach.
The Last Sacraments

A Death Others Cannot Reach
Religious Comfort Refused
Padre Rentería visits Susana and tries to guide her toward thoughts of death and judgment. She rejects his consolations, insisting on rest and returning instead to memories of Florencio.
Pedro’s Helpless Vigil
Pedro remains near her, hoping that his presence or devotion might ease her suffering. His wealth cannot restore her health or make her inhabit the emotional world he has constructed around her.
A Private Death in Public Noise

Grief and Misunderstanding
The Funeral Bells
Susana dies, and Comala’s bells ring for days. Visitors mistake the sound of mourning for a celebration and turn the funeral into a noisy public gathering.
Pedro’s Retaliation
The contrast between the crowded town and the silent estate hardens Pedro’s grief into revenge. He withdraws from Comala and deliberately refuses the community the grain on which it depends.
